Katherine Oppenheimer is also a key character in Christopher Nolan’s film, starring Cillian Murphy. Oppenheimer looks to be one of the best releases of 2023, and, in fact, movie fans are in a big dilemma as its release crosses over with that of Barbie, a production that also looks to be one of the best.
The biographical film of Julius Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist of Jewish origin, has raised certain questions among fans, among them, who was Katherine Oppenheimer and why she was so important in the physicist’s life.
Who Was Katherine, Oppenheimer’s Wife?
Katherine, also known as Kitty, had a degree in Botany from the University of Pennsylvania and came to the United States when she was only three years old. Kitty, as everyone knew her, was a technician at the Los Alamos Laboratory, but quit her job after a year.
Although she did not return to her profession, she did host many cocktail socials for women to help distract them from the heavy, high-pressure environment. Katherine Oppenheimer maintained an intense relationship and marriage with J. Robert Oppenheimer, as the two depended immensely on each other. In fact, it is said that the ‘father of the atomic bomb‘ sought his wife’s advice and opinion very often during the problems with the Manhattan Project.

The couple had two sons, Peter and Tony, who were raised by the Oppenheimers in Los Alamos; however, after WWII, they all had to move to Princeton, New Jersey. The two faced each other’s problems together and during the security hearing in 1954, both Robert and Kitty had to swear their allegiance to the United States during their testimony before the Atomic Energy Commission.
Shortly thereafter, their security clearance was lost, and it was the beginning of the end of the physicist’s career. After Oppenheimer’s death, due to throat cancer, Kitty scattered his ashes near his home in St. John, which is now known as Oppenheimer Beach, and then moved in with an old family friend, Robert Serber; the two lived out their grief on a sailing trip around the world.
Katherine Oppenheimer later died of a pulmonary embolism during that trip. Katherine was a fundamental piece in Oppenheimer’s life. Emily Blunt was chosen to bring Kitty back to life in Nolan’s film.
Oppenheimer will hit theaters on July 21, and since the announcement of its production, it is already considered one of the best films of recent times.
