Laci Peterson was a 27-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant when she disappeared from her home in Modesto, California, on December 24, 2002. Her case quickly captured national attention due to the tragic circumstances and the subsequent investigation.
Laci Peterson Tragic Case: The Unsolved Questions
The case has received so much attention that there are some documentaries that explain the case in detail.
Laci was last seen alive on Christmas Eve 2002. Her husband, Scott Peterson, reported her missing later that day, claiming he had returned from a solo fishing trip to find their home empty. The community and law enforcement launched an extensive search, but hopes of finding Laci alive dwindled as days turned into weeks.
In April 2003, the remains of Laci and her unborn son, Conner, were discovered in the San Francisco Bay, not far from where Scott had claimed to be fishing, which positioned Scott as the prime suspect in the investigation months after the report.

The discovery of the bodies intensified the investigation, and Scott Peterson was arrested shortly thereafter.
Laci Peterson’s autopsy report revealed that Laci’s body was in a state of advanced decomposition, making it difficult to determine the exact cause of death.
However, the report noted that she had suffered multiple injuries, including broken ribs. The remains of her unborn son, Conner, were found separately, and the umbilical cord was still attached.

The condition of the bodies suggested they had been in the water for a significant period.

Scott Peterson Trial and Claimed Innocence
Scott Peterson’s trial began in 2004 and was highly publicized. The prosecution presented evidence of Scott’s extramarital affair with a woman named Amber Frey, who testified that Scott had told her he was a widower before Laci Peterson’s disappearance.
Amber Frey is a hero. She helped with Scott Peterson’s conviction more than most people realize.
Amber had no idea that Scott was married when she first start seeing him. She immediately called police when she learned about Laci’s disappearance on the news. #LaciPeterson pic.twitter.com/kdn0kjFygT

This, along with other circumstantial evidence, painted a picture of a man who wanted to escape his impending fatherhood and marriage.
In November 2004, Scott Peterson was convicted of first-degree murder for Laci’s death and second-degree murder for the death of their unborn son. He was sentenced to death in March 2005.
Over the years, Scott Peterson has maintained his innocence and has continued to appeal his conviction.
In 2020, the California Supreme Court overturned his death sentence due to issues with jury selection, but his conviction was upheld.

Even after documentaries and investigations have pointed to Scott as the main culprit in the murder of Laci Peterson, to date 20 years later he continues to declare himself innocent and with the help of his lawyer Pat Harris they will work so that with new technology related to DNA they can find sufficient evidence of his innocence.
“If I have a chance to get the reality out there, I have a chance to show people what the truth is,” he said.
