‘I’m Here With You’: The ATC Exchange Before the Palm Beach Learjet Crash

Crater left by the learjet 60 crash on military trail in palm beach county, florida, with emergency responders on scene.

On November 1, a Bombardier Learjet 60 carrying nine people went down in a Palm Beach County residential area in Florida, killing everyone on board. Now, air traffic control recordings from the final minutes of flight N722BD — en route from Austin, Texas to the Bahamas — have surfaced, capturing a crew in freefall reporting descent rates of 22,000 feet per minute, a Mayday call, and words that cut through: “We’re going to crash into the ground.”

A Routine Flight That Became an Unrecoverable Dive

The Learjet 60 had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading toward North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when conditions began to deteriorate. The crew initially reported an outside temperature of -47°C, moderate turbulence, and light icing — manageable, or so it seemed. After entering precipitation, the pilot requested clearance to climb to find smoother air. That request was the last routine communication they would make.

What followed, captured in archived Miami Air Traffic Control audio, was a rapid and catastrophic loss of control. The aircraft entered a dive it could not recover from. The pilot declared a Mayday and called out descent rates in real time — first 8,000 feet per minute, then 10,000, then 20,000, finally 22,000. The jet was also banking at 60 degrees. At that point, no altitude or heading adjustment was going to change the outcome. The plane struck the ground near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in the Cresthaven area around 12:50 PM local time, leaving a crater in the roadway, sparking fires, and knocking out power for roughly 600 evacuated residents nearby.

‘I’m Here With You. Talk to Me.’

The ATC exchange in those final seconds is the part that stays with you. As the pilot called out the Mayday and reported an overspeed condition, the air traffic controller — with nothing left to offer procedurally — responded: “November two Bravo Delta. I’m here with you. Talk to me.” It is the kind of thing a person says when the situation is already past the point of fixing. The controller knew it. The crew knew it.

From the cockpit, someone yelled, “Look outside… we’re out of time.” The pilot confirmed: “We’re going to crash into the ground.” Then the transmission cut off. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, surveying the impact site, described what the aircraft looked like on its final approach: “It looked like a missile going down.” Remarkably, despite heavy debris scattering near a mobile home park and surrounding homes, no one on the ground was killed or seriously injured.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are leading the investigation. Investigators are working to determine whether severe icing, an aerodynamic stall, or a structural control failure — or some combination — caused the crew to lose control so completely and so fast. The exact cause has not yet been established. Nine people did not make it home, and the recording of their last moments is now part of the public record.
