Leslie Groves was convinced of J. Robert Oppenheimer‘s intelligence and talent, so much so that he entrusted him with the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb, during World War II. Groves, who is played by Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, was a general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to whom this secret program developed at Los Alamos was assigned.

This character in history, born in New York on August 17, 1896, is credited with the successful construction of the atomic bomb in the time required before the Japanese succeeded. He oversaw the planning, organization, and construction of the project’s key facilities.

After this success, Groves continued his career in the Army and received several decorations for his service and leadership in the Manhattan Project.

Leslie Groves and Oppenheimer’s Relationship

The relationship between Leslie and Oppenheimer was always more of a working one, they were focused on getting the Manhattan Project off the ground promptly, so it was often complex and fraught with tension. Although they had different backgrounds and approaches, they both recognized the importance of their work and the need to work together to create a potent weapon that would convince the Japanese to surrender.

Although Groves chose Robert to lead the project, there were times when the physicist’s personality frustrated him, and because of his mindset, he came to feel that he was not diligent enough in securing the project.

Leslie Groves: Hero or Villain?

Just like all the characters involved in the creation of the atomic bomb, Leslie Groves’ role has been called into question as to whether he is a hero or a villain, as it will depend on each person’s perspective. Some applaud Groves’ ability to overcome enormous challenges in record time and lead a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and military personnel toward the development of a technology that helped end World War II.

Others criticize him for his authoritarian management style, lack of transparency, and his aggressive approach to achieving the project’s objectives. They also condemn his actions, such as the forced evacuation of indigenous residents and the lack of consideration for the environmental impacts of nuclear testing.

How and When Did Leslie Groves Die?
