Donald Trump has never shied away from making unconventional choices for his administration, and his recent nomination of Linda McMahon to lead the Department of Education is no exception.
McMahon, a long-time ally and financial backer of Trump, brings a resume far removed from the traditional qualifications for the role.
Linda McMahon: Trump’s Unconventional Pick for Education Secretary
Best known as a former executive of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), McMahon lacks a background in teaching or education policy.
Her previous experience in the public sector includes leading the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term, a role she left in 2019 to chair a pro-Trump super PAC. While McMahon briefly served on Connecticut’s Board of Education in 2009, her tenure lasted just over a year.

Now, at 76, she faces the challenge of heading an agency Trump has repeatedly vowed to dismantle, claiming it would return control of education to the states.
But McMahon has been a steadfast supporter of Trump for decades, contributing millions to his campaigns and causes. Her role as president of the America First Policy Institute has further solidified her standing within his inner circle.

Her nomination reflects Trump’s vision for the Department of Education: less federal oversight and more focus on school choice initiatives. McMahon is expected to champion expanding voucher programs and curbing what Trump has described as “inaccurate and anti-patriotic” teachings in schools.

McMahon’s appointment is already sparking debate. Critics point to her lack of expertise in education and her association with Trump’s divisive policies. Moreover, Trump’s calls to eliminate the Department of Education altogether would require congressional approval—a steep climb even within a Republican-controlled legislature.
Meanwhile, schools across the U.S. face pressing challenges: budget deficits, declining academic performance post-pandemic, and a waning public confidence in higher education. How McMahon plans to address these issues remains unclear.
Thank you Mr. President for your trust in me to serve as Secretary of Education and I am hopeful of Senate confirmation. I am deeply honored and humbled for this opportunity and I am committed to working tirelessly to ensure every student has access to a quality education.

Trump and McMahon’s partnership extends beyond politics, rooted in decades of collaboration in the wrestling world. As some may remember, Trump appeared in WWE storylines, famously feuding with Linda’s husband, Vince McMahon, and even shaving his head in a scripted WrestleMania event.
Now, their relationship moves to a new arena—education policy.

If confirmed, McMahon’s tenure could mark a dramatic shift in federal education policy, aligning closely with Trump’s vision of decentralization and school choice. However, her lack of experience and the inherent challenges of dismantling a federal agency ensure her nomination will be a focal point for both critics and supporters in the months ahead.
