Luigi mangione pleads not guilty in federal court

Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty Friday to federal charges accusing him of stalking and murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a high-profile killing that has intensified political debates over healthcare, violence, and the death penalty.

Appearing in tan jail-issued clothing and a white thermal shirt, Mangione entered his plea quietly before U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett in Manhattan. If convicted, the 26-year-old faces a potential death sentence — a punishment federal prosecutors, backed by Attorney General Pam Bondi, have said they will pursue.

Mangione, arrested in December after a five-day national manhunt, has also pleaded not guilty to separate state murder and terrorism charges in New York and weapons charges in Pennsylvania.

Federal Prosecutors Pursue Death Penalty for Luigi Mangione

In a filing this week, federal prosecutors formally notified the court they intend to seek the death penalty, citing the alleged premeditation behind Thompson’s killing and claiming Mangione sought to “provoke broad-based resistance” against the healthcare industry.

The move escalates an already politically charged case, aligning with the Trump administration’s broader emphasis on aggressive capital prosecutions. Bondi, a former Florida attorney general appointed by Trump, called Thompson’s death “a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination.”

The decision to seek execution has drawn criticism from defense attorneys and observers, who argue it turns Mangione’s trial into a political performance as much as a legal proceeding.

A Divided Public Outside Court

Supporters of Mangione gathered outside the courthouse, some wearing masks and sunglasses, others waving signs criticizing the healthcare system and calling for an end to the death penalty.
An LED truck circled the block displaying Mangione’s face alongside slogans. Among those waiting in line was Chelsea Manning, who told reporters she was there not to support Mangione personally, but to observe what she called “a critical test” of fairness in the justice system.

Inside court, Judge Garnett cautioned prosecutors against public commentary that could jeopardize Mangione’s right to a fair trial, specifically instructing that Attorney General Bondi and her staff be reminded of local court rules.

Allegations of Misconduct Surface

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo told the court Friday that prosecutors in the state case had admitted to inadvertently listening in on Mangione’s privileged attorney calls.

Judge Garnett ordered federal prosecutors to submit a written explanation within seven days and indicated additional measures could be taken to ensure Mangione’s rights are preserved.

The defense is also seeking to try the federal case first, arguing that proceeding with the state case would raise constitutional complications, particularly with the death penalty in play.

Complex Charges Across Jurisdictions

Mangione faces four federal counts, including two for stalking, one for murder through use of a firearm, and one related to the alleged use of a silencer. In state court, he is charged with first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, among other counts.

Authorities allege Mangione shot Thompson from behind outside a Manhattan hotel, where the CEO was staying for an investors’ conference. Shell casings found at the scene were marked with words including “deny” and “delay.”

Prosecutors claim Mangione fled New York, crossing into Pennsylvania with a privately manufactured firearm and a silencer before being captured at a McDonald’s restaurant.Luigi mangione pleads not guilty in federal court

Next Steps

Judge Garnett scheduled the next federal hearing for Dec. 5, at which a trial date may be set.

If convicted and sentenced to death, Mangione would join a very small number of federal defendants facing execution in Manhattan — a venue where juries have historically been reluctant to impose it.

His case now moves forward under the weight of national politics, public anger, and a justice system straining to remain impartial.
