The world of figure skating has been struck by an unthinkable tragedy. What should have been another routine flight turned into a devastating loss that has left the community in mourning due to the mid air collision in D.C.
Former world champion figure skaters Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were among the passengers on the American Airlines jet that tragically collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2025. The couple, known for their breathtaking performances and contributions to the sport, were on board the ill-fated flight, alongside other athletes and coaches from the figure skating community.
The Mid Air Collision: What Happened?

The American Airlines flight, operated by PSA Airlines, was traveling from Wichita, Kansas, to Ronald Reagan National Airport when it collided mid-air with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter around 9 p.m. local time. The collision sent both aircraft plunging into the icy waters of the Potomac River.
Rescue efforts have since recovered 28 bodies, including 27 passengers from the jet and one from the helicopter. Authorities fear there are no survivors.
The devastating accident has left investigators scrambling for answers, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) leading the inquiry. President Donald Trump has extended his condolences and called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Shishkova and Naumov: A Legacy of Excellence
Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, both originally from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, were an extraordinary pair both on and off the ice. Their partnership led them to win the 1994 World Figure Skating Championships and the 1995–96 Champions Series Final. They also achieved numerous medals at the European Championships and other prestigious international events.

Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov retired from competitive skating in 1998 and transitioned into coaching, dedicating their lives to mentoring the next generation of skaters. Their influence was felt deeply at the International Skating Center in Simsbury, Connecticut, and later at the Skating Club of Boston, where they nurtured aspiring athletes with the same passion and dedication that defined their own careers.
And here’s a clip I made of the exuberant reactions of Grace Zhang and her coaches, Vadim Naumov & Evgenia Shishkova, as she received her personal best score in the kiss & cry afterwards – such an amazing range of emotions was on display within 20 seconds!!!😊 2/2#SkateNQSFinals pic.twitter.com/fdmMDlPJ9l
