Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Tuesday that the country will impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in response to President Donald Trump’s new 25% tariffs on Mexican imports, escalating tensions between the two neighboring economies.
While Sheinbaum did not disclose which products would be affected, she confirmed that the details of Mexico’s countermeasures will be unveiled Sunday at a public event in Mexico City’s central plaza. The delay in announcing specifics suggests Mexico may be looking for diplomatic off-ramps before the situation worsens into a full-scale trade war.

Trump’s Tariffs Ignite International Response
The move comes just one day after Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods, citing concerns over drug trafficking and national security. The U.S. government framed the tariffs as a punitive measure for Mexico’s alleged failure to curb fentanyl trafficking, an accusation Sheinbaum strongly denied. The new policy also targeted China, raising tariffs on imports from the Asian superpower from 10% to 20% after Beijing retaliated with its own measures.
Mexico joins China and Canada in pushing back against the Trump administration’s aggressive trade strategy. On Tuesday, both countries announced their own tariffs in response, setting the stage for a heated international dispute that could have significant economic repercussions.

Sheinbaum’s Defiant Response
President Sheinbaum took a firm stance against Trump’s decision, calling it “offensive, defamatory, and without support.” She emphasized that Mexico has been actively combating drug trafficking, citing the seizure of over a ton of fentanyl and the dismantling of 329 methamphetamine labs in recent months. Additionally, Mexico extradited 29 alleged cartel members to the U.S. just last week.
“We collaborate to avoid illegal drug trafficking to the United States,” Sheinbaum stated. “But as we have said on multiple occasions, that country’s government must take responsibility too for the crisis of opioid consumption that has caused so many deaths in the United States.”
She also warned of the economic consequences that American consumers and businesses will face due to the tariffs, predicting higher prices and disruptions to key supply chains.
“It’s inconceivable that they don’t think about the damage this is going to cause to U.S. citizens and businesses, along with the loss of jobs in both countries,” she said. “No one wins with this decision.”
As tensions mount, the international business community is bracing for potential disruptions in trade and investment. Experts warn that a prolonged trade dispute could slow economic growth and increase inflation in both Mexico and the U.S. Some analysts speculate that Mexico’s response will likely target politically sensitive industries in the U.S., such as agriculture and manufacturing, in an effort to pressure Trump to reconsider his stance.
While Mexico has expressed a willingness to negotiate, Sunday’s announcement will reveal whether the government is still open to diplomacy or prepared to fully engage in the trade war.
