Netflix Faces Backlash Over Removal of 19 Palestinian Films

Netflix, one of the world’s leading streaming platforms, is under fire for removing 19 films associated with Palestinian stories and filmmakers.

The decision, which has sparked an outcry on social media and accusations of censorship, has amplified discussions on cultural representation in digital media. This move has raised ethical and political concerns about the streaming giant’s approach to content.

The removal affects a collection of critically acclaimed films, including Divine Intervention, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes, and Salt of This Sea by renowned Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir.

Both films were part of a collection distributed by Front Row Filmed Entertainment, a Dubai-based company that had licensed the content. The sudden disappearance of these films is perceived by some as “covert censorship.”

The advocacy group Freedom Forward voiced strong disapproval, calling the streaming service’s actions a deliberate silencing of Palestinian narratives and has since launched an online petition urging the streaming platform to clarify its decision and reinstate the removed content.

This initiative has garnered significant support from the public, reflecting widespread concern over the removal of Palestinian voices from a major entertainment platform.

Letter to Netflix’s Executive Team: A Call for Transparency

An open letter was then addressed to Netflix’s executive team, dated October 25, 2024. The letter expresses grave concerns about Netflix’s actions, particularly at a time when the Palestinian population in Gaza faces an ongoing crisis.

Freedom Forward’s letter highlights how the erasure of Palestinian stories from Netflix risks perpetuating a one-sided narrative, limiting global audiences’ understanding of the Palestinian perspective.

The letter, shared widely on social media, poses specific questions to Netflix’s executive team:

  • Why were 19 Palestinian films removed in mid-October 2024?
  • What criteria were used to determine the removal of these films?
  • Has Netflix faced external pressure, including from lobby groups, to make this decision?

Advocates argue that these questions are crucial to understanding the extent of potential bias in Netflix’s approach to content curation, particularly given Western media’s historical marginalization of Palestinian narratives.

The Importance of Palestinian Representation on Global Platforms

The open letter emphasizes that removing Palestinian stories is not just a commercial decision but a cultural and political one. The authors note that the ongoing crisis in Gaza and escalating violence have increased the need for greater awareness of Palestinian life and perspectives and, by promoting Palestinian films, Netflix could play an essential role in providing audiences with a more balanced view of the complex situation in the Middle East.

Freedom Forward’s Executive Director Sunjeev Bery took to social media, tagging Netflix in a post that gained massive traction, viewed by over 1.3 million people worldwide. With over 20,000 likes and thousands of reshares, this post has brought heightened visibility to the issue, pressuring Netflix to respond more substantively. The letter urges Netflix to reinstate the films and, by doing so, reaffirm its commitment to diverse representation and inclusivity.

Netflix’s removal of Palestinian films has reignited the conversation on where commercial decisions intersect with censorship, particularly when it comes to representing marginalized communities.

In response to the criticism, the content distributor cited expired licensing agreements as the reason for the removal, emphasizing that the company continues to support diverse voices globally.

“Those licenses have already expired. As always, we continue to invest in a wide variety of quality movies and TV shows to meet the needs of our members and celebrate voices from around the world”

However, this justification has not been enough to stem the tide of public outrage, with many questioning whether the expiration alone justifies the removal of a collection that highlights the Palestinian experience and cancelling their accounts.

Despite the defense, key Palestinian titles such as 200 Meters, Farha, and the Oscar-nominated Ajami remain on the platform. Nevertheless, the #BoycottNetflix hashtag is gaining traction as advocates call for greater transparency and accountability in content decisions that could silence marginalized communities.
