In the search for answers about the disappearance of the Titan submarine, where five people died due to an implosion, old theories were recalled, among which the curse of Newfoundland stands out. Unfortunately, this area is famous because it is where several ships, including the Titan and the Titanic, entered but did not leave…
Where Is the Island of Newfoundland
The island of Newfoundland is the fourth largest island in Canada and ranks 16th in the world. It is located in northeastern Canada and is part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This place is very cold, has 40 thousand icebergs around it, and the water is icy, which complicates the navigation of ships.

The Curse of Newfoundland
Titan is not the only ship to disappear in this area. It is enough to remember what happened to the Titanic, that ship that brushed against one of the icebergs until it sank to the depths of the ocean. That tragedy left more than 1,500 dead.
San Juan Whaler
In October 1565, there was a Spanish crown whaler named ‘San Juan’, sank in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. With a thousand barrels of whale oil on board, a strong storm took this vessel that was passing through the area of Newfoundland. No fatalities were reported at the time, but it was made known that the incident occurred on this island. This would be the first registered event for which they consider this area to be under a curse.
Ocean Ranger Oil Plant
In February 1982, a new tragedy shocked the whole world. The semi-submersible oil rig Ocean Ranger disappeared in the middle of a storm while sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, 267 kilometers off Newfoundland. That time 84 people died, all of them employees of the platform.
Freighter Mekanik Tarasov
Also in 1982, the death of 15 seafarers, and the disappearance of 18 and four survivors, who were traveling on the USSR freighter Mekanik Tarasov, were reported. This time, the sinking of the Soviet container ship was reportedly the result of strong winds that generated waves of up to 15 meters.

Other Vessels…
The tragedies did not end there. In 1992, a new incident occurred. It was the fishing vessel Izarraga I, although there were no casualties. While in 2022, the vessel Villa de Pitanxo sank with 21 of 24 crew members on board.
More than 100 years after what happened to the Titanic, on June 19, 2023, it was announced that the Titan submarine, in which five people were traveling with the illusion of seeing the wreckage of the ship inspired one of James Cameron’s most successful movies, had disappeared and suffered an implosion, right in the area of Newfoundland.
Some say it is a simple coincidence due to the weather conditions of the site, while others say it is a curse, where ships are destined to disappear and people are destined to die. What do you think?
