The impressive eruption of a volcano in Japan sent incandescent rocks into the sea around Niijima Island, located 170 kilometers from the capital of that country, Tokyo. The moment of the eruption was captured on video by Japan’s coast guard, which shared the images on Tuesday. Authorities reported that the eruption reached a height of around 200 meters and that the volcanic island in question was formed 10 years ago. Its name translates as “new island.”
Volcano erupts in Japan
The volcano on Niijima Island, located just off the coast of Iwo Jima, erupted on November 23, spewing impressive columns of ash and smoke. The explosion was similar to that of a geyser. This activity continues the series of eruptions that began with an underwater volcano near the island on November 9, leading to the gradual expansion of the newly formed land mass. The eruption was another great display of the power of nature.
The volcanic island, formed a decade ago (Niijima-new island) has been the subject of geological interest due to its recent emergence. This last eruption resulted in a buildup of volcanic material on the north side of the crater, leading to the expansion of the island. Born approximately one kilometer off the southern coast of Iwoto Island in 2013, after intense volcanic activity, the new island was sighted for the first time by military personnel in the area. At that time, it measured around 230 meters in length and 200 meters in width. Since then, the island has shown significant growth, almost merging with nearby Iwo Jima.
