The “Black Pope” Prophecy: Nostradamus May Have Seen This Coming

The 16th-century mystic might’ve called it—Francis’s death has reignited talk of a dark-skinned successor, Vatican destruction, and a Church in crisis.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a man who spent his papacy preaching humility, justice, and mercy, has died at the age of 88. His death marks the end of a deeply human era for the Catholic Church—one defined not by gold and grandeur, but by gestures of simplicity, reform, and connection.

And yet, as the world mourns a pope who challenged tradition, an old prophecy has crept back into the spotlight. Whispers of Nostradamus’s infamous “Black Pope” prediction are gaining traction online—fuelled by Francis’s Jesuit background, the looming conclave, and a growing sense that something is shifting at the heart of the Vatican.

The Original Nostradamus Prophecy and What It Says

Michel de Nostradamus, the 16th-century French astrologer best known for his cryptic rhyming quatrains, has long been credited—fairly or not—with predicting historical turning points. The rise of Napoleon. The Great Fire of London. The Covid-19 pandemic. And now, Pope Francis’s death.

One of the most discussed quatrains reads:

“Through the death of a very old Pontiff / A Roman of good age will be elected / Of him it will be said that he weakens his seat / But long will he sit and in mordant activity.”

Another passage, even murkier, hints at:

“A young man of dark skin / with the help of the great king / will deliver the purse / to another of red colour.”

And then there’s the kicker: Nostradamus also warned of the destruction of the “City of Seven Hills”—a phrase widely interpreted to mean Rome, specifically Vatican City.

As usual, the interpretations are messy, speculative, and fueled more by vibes than hard proof. But that hasn’t stopped the internet from spiraling.

Why People Think Francis Was the “Black Pope”

Let’s get one thing out of the way: the term “Black Pope” has absolutely nothing to do with skin color—at least not originally. It’s long been a nickname for the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, aka the Jesuits. Why? Because they wear black cassocks and wield quiet, behind-the-scenes influence.

And who was Pope Francis? The first Jesuit pope in history.

That alone has been enough for some conspiracy theorists and prophecy truthers to point fingers and say he was the Black Pope Nostradamus foresaw. He came from outside Europe, broke countless papal traditions, and openly challenged corruption within the Church. In that sense, he was a “dark” figure to the status quo—if not in skin tone, certainly in revolutionary impact.

Now that he’s gone, the question is: was he the fulfillment of the prophecy, or just the beginning?

Could the Next Pope Fulfill the Prophecy?

Here’s where things get even more interesting—and potentially historic.

Of the 133 cardinals eligible to vote in the next conclave, 33 are Black, and 23 of them were appointed by Francis himself. Several African cardinals, including Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana and Cardinal Dieudonné Nzapalainga of the Central African Republic, are seen as potential frontrunners.

If elected, this would mark the first time in modern history that a Black man would lead the Catholic Church—and depending on how much you believe in mystical foresight, it might just check the final box in Nostradamus’s apocalyptic bingo card.

At the same time, many dismiss these theories outright, calling them a mix of superstition, racism, and classic Vatican drama. But the fact that so many people are suddenly searching for “Black Pope prophecy” online? That tells us something about the cultural grip these ideas still have.

What’s Real, What’s Hype, and Why It Matters

Look, Nostradamus didn’t write a script for 2025. But what he did do was tap into a human obsession with power, mortality, and chaos. The idea of a “Black Pope” rising, the Vatican collapsing, and religion being turned on its head? It’s both terrifying and fascinating—and that’s exactly why it trends every time a pope dies.

For believers, the prophecy feels like a warning. For skeptics, it’s just the internet doing its thing. And for the Catholic Church, it’s a moment of reckoning. Francis spent his life trying to bring the Church closer to the people—talking about poverty, abuse, inequality, and the planet like no pope before him.

His death leaves a vacuum—and a massive question mark.
Not just about who comes next… but what kind of Church they’ll inherit. Or burn down.

Prophecy or Paranoia?

Maybe Nostradamus saw the future. Maybe he just understood how much we crave meaning when the world shifts beneath us.

What we do know is this: the papacy just changed. The world’s watching. And somewhere, buried in the fog of Renaissance poetry and TikTok threads, the prophecy of the Black Pope lives on—real or not.
