Peter Lindbergh, the famed contemporary photographer, whose work appeared on magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, died in Paris on Tuesday at the age of 74. His official instagram account confirmed his passing early on Wednesday with a statement that read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Lindbergh on September 3rd 2019, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife Petra, his first wife Astrid, his four sons Benjamin, Jérémy, Simon, Joseph, and seven grandchildren. He leaves a big void.”
Lindbergh’s career spanned over four decades, and he was best known for shooting groundbreaking fashion magazine portraits that helped launch the supermodel era. His pared-back style of photos, going against the glamour and excess of the previous style of pictures, are instantly recognizable. Among his most recognized works are the 1990’s portraits of Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista.
@therealpeterlindberghLindbergh was also known for refusing to retouch his photographs and for disliking makeup, instead preferring a more natural concept of beauty.
He had recently worked with Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who came on as guest editor for Vogue’s “Forces of Change” issue. In this issue, the magazine celebrated 15 leading women, including former First Lady Michelle Obama, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, teenage climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, boxer Ramla Ali, model Adut Akech, and actresses Jameela Jamil, Laverne Cox, and Jane Fonda.
The Duchess of Sussex posted the same image, a tribute to Lindbergh in which she stressed his contribution to photography before concluding with a rather poignant note: “He will be deeply missed.”
