In a shocking and tragic incident, Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has suffered severe burns after being set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.

The incident occurred on September 1, 2024, at Cheptegei’s home in Kenya.

According to police reports, an argument between Cheptegei and Ndiema escalated dramatically. Ndiema allegedly bought a jerrican of petrol, poured it on Cheptegei, and set her ablaze. The attack left Cheptegei with burns covering 75% of her body.

“Her condition looks serious with facial burns and bandages,” a MTRH staff member told AFP, requesting anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Ndiema also sustained burn injuries during the incident and both are currently receiving specialized treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city.

Rebecca Cheptegei, who represented Uganda at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is known for her resilience and dedication to her sport. This incident has sent shockwaves through the athletic community and beyond, highlighting the urgent need for addressing domestic violence.
