Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to step back from their Royal duties, and the Crown basically turn their backs on them, they’ve been experiencing new possibilities that were unthinkable for members of the Royal Family. Among these is appearing on television shows and giving controversial interviews about their lives.
Just yesterday, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, appeared on the Ellen Show to talk about her new book, some cute anecdotes about their two kids, Archie and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten, as well as participating in a funny skit that showed a Meghan we hadn’t seen before. Just a couple of months earlier, her husband Prince Harry did something similar in James Corden’s Late Late Show. This has made audiences know these royals differently, making them more approachable, and being honest, the entire Royal Family should be watching and learning from them.
The Crown is at a crucial moment in their history. For the past years, the question about the future of the British monarchy has been debated all over the country, and today the question is more pressing than ever. Prince Philip’s death earlier this year and Queen Elizabeth turning 95 has made the issue more urgent. What will happen to the Royal Family when Queen Elizabeth isn’t here to put the pieces together? Who will be the head of The Crown?
Naturally, Prince Charles is going to take over the job, but is he fit to do so? Let’s see where the Crown is standing right now. So far, Harry and Meghan made it clear that there’s an issue of racism within the Royal Family. Not only that, with 7% approval, Prince Andrew’s scandal has been kept outside the spotlight thanks to Queen Elizabeth, but the stain is still there. For years now, the anti-monarchy movement has been gaining popularity, and many still think the Royal Family is just costing millions to taxpayers. All in all, if the monarchy is still as strong as today it is because of Queen Elizabeth.
People don’t like major changes, that’s a fact. One of the reasons why the monarchy is still on its feet is because people are used to the Queen who has been head of the country for over half a century, but take her out of the equation and the strength the Crown has today is going to fall into pieces. It’s also a fact that Prince Charles doesn’t have her mother’s knack to dodge controversies and let’s not forget that Charles is the protagonist of one of the greatest scandals the Windsors have endured.
Shows like The Crown, and the new film Spencer, aren’t helping Charles’ cause in terms of his public image. It seems that dodging the polemics has only increased the people’s anger towards the heir, and how will he take deal with the conversation once he’s put on directly in the spotlight?
Let’s go back to the beginning, they should really be learning something from Harry and Meghan. It’s evident that people care about the Royal Family and its members, and it’s even more evident that they are avid to know more about their personal lives. Perhaps, showing a little bit of that aspect could help them change the image many have of them, especially Charles, who isn’t in very good numbers regarding his approval rate. If Harry and Meghan are doing something good is showing a more human aspect of the monarchy, and the more they push them back, the more they’re raising their popularity in the world. That’s what the Royal Family needs; it’s an evolve or die matter.
