Thomas Markle Sr., the 82-year-old estranged father of Meghan Markle, was arrested by federal agents near Tampa, Florida on Friday, November 6, 2026, according to reporting from AP, Reuters, CBS News and The Guardian. The arrest is linked to a federal investigation that spans the Philippines, Mexico and the United States — and that Meghan says she tried to alert authorities to as far back as 2018.

How the Investigation Came Together Across Three Countries

The chain of events began in October 2026, when Thomas Markle Jr. — Meghan’s half-brother — reportedly discovered a collection of images depicting child sexual abuse while clearing out his father’s former residence in Cebu, Philippines. According to reporting by The Sun, the alleged cache may have numbered in the hundreds or potentially thousands of images. Markle Jr. contacted Philippine authorities and handed over electronic devices, including a laptop.

Philippine authorities opened an investigation through their anti-trafficking and online child exploitation task force. The FBI separately acknowledged the allegations and confirmed it could pursue potential violations of U.S. federal law. Then the Daily Mail reported a second discovery: materials allegedly connected to Thomas Markle Sr. found in a storage unit near his former residence in Rosarito, Mexico. By November 6, federal agents had made the arrest at a senior living facility in Lakeland, Florida. CBS News reported that the federal case remained under seal, and the specific charges had not yet been publicly filed at the time of the arrest. Much like other high-profile federal CSAM cases in recent years, the cross-border dimension significantly accelerated the FBI’s involvement.

What Meghan Said — and When She Said It

Before the arrest, Meghan Markle addressed the allegations publicly in October 2026. She said she was deeply distressed by the reports and expressed concern for any children who might have been harmed. But the detail that reframed the entire estrangement narrative was this: Meghan revealed she had been made aware of troubling allegations involving her father years earlier, and that a letter containing those claims had been sent to London police in 2018.

British police acknowledged receiving a letter with allegations, though CBS News reported that police records placed its receipt in 2019, not 2018. Authorities said the information had not been forwarded to other law enforcement agencies at the time. Meghan said her decision to cut contact with her father — and to keep Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet away from him — was driven by a need to protect her children. The timeline she described, if accurate, means she was quietly managing this for years while the public narrative around the estrangement focused almost entirely on the British royal family drama.

Before his arrest, Thomas Markle Sr. strongly denied the allegations. In comments reported by the Daily Mail, he called the accusations “sick lies” and denied ever downloading the material described. His arrest does not establish guilt; the allegations remain subject to investigation and formal legal proceedings.
