In the latest escalation of the global trade war, President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a staggering 200% tariff on wine, champagne, and other alcoholic products imported from the European Union. The move, announced Thursday on his Truth Social platform, is framed as retaliation for the EU’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on American bourbon whiskey, which Trump described as “nasty.”

The EU’s tariff on bourbon, set to take effect April 1, is part of a broader €26 billion response to Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which went into effect earlier this week. The tit-for-tat measures have heightened tensions between the U.S. and its largest trading partners, raising concerns about the potential economic fallout on both sides of the Atlantic.

A Trade War Spiral

The Trump administration has long argued that U.S. trading partners have taken advantage of the country, and the president has repeatedly claimed that tariffs will help bring back jobs and revitalize American industries. However, most mainstream economists reject this theory, warning that tariffs could stifle global trade, increase consumer prices, and potentially tip the U.S. economy into recession.

“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added, “This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.”

The U.S. already produces its own versions of European delicacies, such as sparkling wine marketed as “champagne” and domestically made parmesan and gorgonzola cheeses, circumventing the EU’s protected geographical origin rules. Trump’s latest threat could further boost domestic producers while dealing a blow to European exporters.

Market Jitters and European Backlash

The announcement sent shockwaves through financial markets. European shares fell on Thursday, with France’s Cac 40 index dropping 0.3% and Germany’s Dax index declining 0.6%. Leading European drinks companies, including Pernod Ricard, Rémy Cointreau, and LVMH (owner of Moët & Chandon), saw their shares fall by as much as 4%.

In the U.S., the benchmark S&P 500 dipped 0.2% at the opening of trading, reflecting investor anxiety over the escalating trade conflict. The White House has so far dismissed concerns about the economic impact of tariffs, even as stock market sell-offs have erased gains made since Trump’s election in November 2016.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen defended the EU’s trade policies on Wednesday, emphasizing the mutual benefits of transatlantic trade.

“Trade between Europe and the U.S. has brought prosperity and security to millions of people, and trade has created millions of jobs on both sides of the Atlantic,” she said.

Trump, however, has repeatedly criticized the EU, accusing the bloc of being “one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the world.” He has also claimed that the EU was “formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States.”

The threat of a 200% tariff on EU wine and champagne marks a significant escalation in the ongoing trade dispute. Trump has framed the move as a necessary response to unfair trade practices, but it could further destabilize global markets and harm U.S. consumers and businesses reliant on European imports.

As the April 1 deadline for the EU’s bourbon tariff approaches, all eyes are on whether either side will back down—or if the world is headed for a prolonged and damaging trade war.
