A 27-year-old man from Las Vegas drove across the country, walked into a Manhattan office tower with an M4 rifle, and opened fire Monday evening, killing four people—including an off-duty NYPD officer—before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.
The Suspect: Shane Devon Tamura
Police identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, a licensed private investigator from Las Vegas with a documented history of mental health issues. Born in Hawaii and raised in Southern California, Tamura was a former high school football standout remembered by teammates and coaches as quiet, disciplined, and well-liked. He later relocated to Nevada, where he obtained a concealed weapon permit and worked at a casino.
Investigators said Tamura’s BMW—registered in Nevada—contained a rifle case, ammunition magazines, a loaded revolver, and prescription medication. The vehicle’s travel data confirmed a cross-country trip that ended in New York City hours before the attack.

The Shooting at 345 Park Avenue
The attack began just after business hours at 345 Park Avenue, a Midtown skyscraper housing tenants including the NFL, Rudin Management, and KPMG. Surveillance footage showed Tamura exiting a double-parked black BMW while openly carrying an M4 rifle.
He entered the building lobby, where he immediately shot Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working a security job off-duty. Witnesses said panic erupted as workers tried to flee. Tamura continued to fire, killing a woman who had taken cover behind a pillar and wounding others before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he shot and killed another person.
Four people were killed in total. One man remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Several others sustained minor injuries while escaping.
Tamura ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A Note and a Possible Motive
Authorities recovered a three-page note from Tamura at the scene. In it, he expressed anger over the NFL’s handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head injuries in football players. He referenced former Pittsburgh Steeler Terry Long, who died by suicide in 2006 after suffering from CTE, and wrote:
“Study my brain please. I’m sorry.”
Officials are investigating whether the attack was targeted at the NFL, whose offices are located in the building. However, Tamura did not enter the league’s floor. The NYPD stressed that the motive remains under investigation.

The NYPD, working with Las Vegas authorities, is combing through Tamura’s electronics and social media for clues. His cross-country route—through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey—suggests the attack was premeditated.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that a league employee was seriously injured and called the shooting “an unspeakable act of violence.”
