Who is Winston Lee, the Cornell 7 defendant linked to South Korean royalty

A civil lawsuit filed in New York has named seven current and former Cornell University students — collectively known as the Cornell 7 — in allegations of sexual assault dating to October 2024. Among them, Winston Lee has drawn the most sustained public attention: not only because of what the lawsuit alleges, but because unverified online speculation has linked him to a former South Korean Prime Minister, turning a campus legal case into an international story.

What the lawsuit actually says about Winston Lee

The civil suit was filed by a former student identified as Jane Doe. It alleges that in October 2024, she was coerced into consuming alcohol and ketamine before being sexually assaulted by multiple members of the Chi Phi fraternity at their house on Cornell’s campus. Lee is named as one of seven defendants alongside Matthew Ingalls, Johnathan Newell, Gillio Lopes, Diego Sarabia, Scott Norris, and Scott Kretzschmar. The suit seeks undisclosed damages against the individual students, the fraternity, and the university itself.

None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime. The claims in the lawsuit remain unproven in court. That said, local authorities reopened a criminal investigation after the details published in the lawsuit became public — a development that signals the case carries weight beyond the civil filing. Lee remains listed as an enrolled student in Cornell University‘s directory, and student reports from as recently as late September 2026 indicate he has been seen attending classes on campus. He sometimes goes by the first name John. Much like other high-profile campus cases that reshaped how universities handle assault allegations, this one is forcing an institution to answer for what happened under its roof.

The Lee Hong-koo rumor: what’s confirmed and what isn’t

The layer of the story that crossed into international media is a claim circulating on English-language and South Korean message boards: that Winston Lee may be the grandson of Lee Hong-koo, who served as Prime Minister of South Korea in the 1990s. The rumor spread through a combination of surname overlap and visual comparisons drawn from funeral footage — not through any confirmed family record or official statement.

The Korea Times and IBTimes UK both examined the claim and were explicit: the connection is completely unverified. No member of the Lee Hong-koo family has confirmed any relationship. Legal analysts who weighed in on the speculation have also noted that the citizenship angle — whether Lee holds American, South Korean, or dual citizenship — would not protect him from New York prosecution for events that allegedly took place there. Standard extradition agreements between the U.S. and South Korea exist, should any legal proceedings require his presence in court. The rumor didn’t create the case; the case created the conditions for a rumor like this to spread fast and land hard.
