Genevieve Beacom, Rachel Balkovec, and Jaime Vieira have made history in the world of baseball by occupying, each one, important positions within teams of great weight and that set a precedent for female participation in the so-called “King of Sports”.
On January 8, Genevieve Beacom became the first woman to pitch in the Australian Professional Baseball League, when she was called to the mound by the Melbourne Challenge Aces to pitch the sixth inning score.
A day later, on January 9, Rachel Balkovec was selected by the New York Yankees as a Class A manager in the Minor Leagues, being the first woman to head a set of minority systems of Major League Baseball, who will have her opposite to lead the Tampa Tarpons.
Following Rachel, Jaime Vieira was named hitting coach by the Toronto Blue Jays heading into the 2022 season in Minor League Baseball on January 10.
Impossible to deny what these three days in January have been for women, which also leads us to remember July 20, 2020, when Alyssa Nakken debuted as a first base coach for the San Francisco Giants in a Major League Baseball game.
Or when the Miami Marlins appointed Kim Ng as general manager on November 13, 2020, by then being the first woman in US sports history to hold such a position.
