For many of us, earrings are an indispensable accessory. No matter where you’ve pierced your body, or the size and shape of the earrings, these classic accessories can give a special touch to your style. The most common spot is ears with pretty much an infinite range of styles, shapes, colors, and materials to choose from. However, many of us can’t wear earrings that are not gold and, in some cases, silver. Here is the scientific reason.
This problem is known as allergic eczema, and as the name states, it is an allergic reaction in your skin. If you suffer from it, you already know that you can only wear gold earrings; otherwise, you will have itching, redness, swelling, and, in more severe cases, a rash in the earlobe or wherever your piercing is located. The main material that causes this reaction is nickel, which can even cause a serious infection.

Costume jewelry, which is the most common one, has nickel as its main material. Even some high-end brands have jewelry made with alloys of nickel with silver and white gold pieces. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to alleviate this condition. However, some tricks can help you avoid contact with nickel and still rock those inexpensive but stylish pieces.
For example, you can try putting a layer of clear nail polish on the earring stud; this will isolate the metal and prevent it from having direct contact with your skin. If you are still not convinced by this hack, you can always look for earrings with plastic studs.

You can also buy earrings made of surgical steel or titanium, as these do not contain nickel. These materials are commonly used as the first piece when you get a piercing mainly because it prevents any reaction or infection. So it’s a great alternative to expensive gold jewelry.
