8 Closet Essentials For Your First Year In College

For most of us, leaving for college or university is the first time we leave our parents’ home in order to experience the world on our own. This is an eye-opening moment when we realize what we’ve taken for granted and start learning self-sufficiency. When it comes to style, I don’t think there’s one person who’s never cringed when finding a picture of themselves during their first year of higher education. Why? Well, probably, because our newfound freedom comes at a price of learning how to manage our closet and our wallet.

But just because your life will be guided by slightly different rules, that doesn’t mean you need to change everything about your personal esthetic. I think that’s a common mistake we’ve all made. We tend to think that if we switch some things around we’ll be able to shed the part of us that we don’t like as much. But I’ve learned the hard way that reinvention does not come from these radical attempts to become a different person overnight. Discovering new perspectives and worldviews by reading and talking to people your comfort zone wouldn’t allow you to does more for redefining yourself and your style than buying a completely new wardrobe.

If you’re moving to a dorm or a Greek house, keep in mind that your wardrobe might take a new direction. You’ll have a limited amount of space for all your stuff, so it’s important to make a plan beforehand of what you will take with you and what’s best to leave behind. You don’t want to haul something over there so that it remains in your closet for the entire year. Here are some essentials that you might want to consider when packing your bags.

Denim

I think this is an obvious choice, but pay attention to what sort of jeans you bring to campus. Try all of these on before throwing them in the suitcase. We’ve all purchased an expensive pair because every Instagrammer is raving about it, only to try them on and realize they’re not doing us any favors. As much as you try to create a new fashion-forward outfit for every day, between classes and exams you’re going to need a no-brainer for mornings when your alarm doesn’t go off and you have to cross the entire campus to make it to your 9 am class on time. Bring what you know you’ll wear. For example, in my case, I brought three pairs of light-wash jeans that I never saw a need to take out of the closet.

Cardigans

Everyone always talks about sweatshirts for college. And yes, you’ll probably buy a ton of school logo gear, hoodie included. But keep a couple of basic cardis for days when you want to wear something a little different. Pair them with your favorite t-shirt or dress and you’ll feel a little more dressed up than usual. Perfect for a get-together, date, or party. These keep you warm, casual, and stylish.

Long skirt

There will be days when you just want to feel comfortable and breezy. Hence, the long skirt, one of the best inventions out there. Not only is this the best item for heading out of your room in a pinch, it can also be combined with different tops, depending on what look you’re going for. Wear it with a baggy shirt tucked in, and you’re good for class. Throw on a bralette or crop-top, and it’s a party outfit. Also, this a great tracksuit alternative for lazy days when you don’t have time to shave your legs before heading out.

Interview/Event outfits

College is so casual that we might forget that there will be moments, like class presentations or school events, where we’ll be required to bring out something that isn’t our dormwear or library uniform. Keep a classic dress that you won’t be pulling down (or up) all day, or a sleek suit. You can pair this with a cardi or a blazer to give it an extra touch.

Leggings and tights

I wish someone would’ve pointed out to me during my years of higher education that leggings and tights were not substitutes for pants. Well, they probably did, but I just didn’t listen. That being said, layering is always a great idea as the months get colder. A nice pair of fleece leggings are great to wear under your jeans for mornings when it feels like leaving your room is not unlike braving the Tundra.

Outerwear

Always, always, always, do a little research into the climate of the place you’re moving to. If you underestimate how cold it can get, and then realize a week in that you’re freezing your behind, whatever options you find in the nearby mall or store will be really expensive. If you’re from a warmer climate, check out some thrift shops when you first arrive. Don’t wait until everyone else has bought all the good stuff. Keep some light jackets for everyday and heavy duty ones for colder months.

Walking shoes

Yes, please don’t bring 10 pairs of high heels with you. They might be pretty, but when you have to walk around all day, you won’t want them at all. Bring one pair, if you’re so inclined, that you can match with just about everything. But don’t worry, nobody is telling you to just wear sneakers, unless that’s your preference. Invest in some nice flats that will get you from your dorm to class to the party without hurting your feet. You’ll thank me later.

Flip-flops

Do not forget these for the showers or the floors. Just because you walked around your house barefoot all day does not mean you should trust the ten year-old carpets in your new digs. I mean it. Please keep your feet protected at all times. You can have another pair for going outside, but don’t use the same one. It’s pretty gross to bring all those germs inside the shower. Use the cheap plastic pair for bathroom and the nicer faux leather ones for gallivanting.

You’ll go through plenty of emotions and experiences this first year. But don’t worry, it’s all part of growing up and finding out who you are and what you want in life. Don’t make it about trying to present an image. Instead, let your image be molded by what you start learning and observing.
