Fashion is cyclical. Trends in clothing, makeup, shoes, nails, and hair are in constant movement and renewal, sometimes bringing new elements, and others recycling past hits. When it comes to hair trends, every month offers a new style that dethrones the previous one. Colors, styles, treatments, and haircuts go in and out of fashion thanks to celebrities, artists, and models.
Back in the 1970s, fashion was divided by a stark contrast. Both bright neon colors and dark rock-and-roll styles were popular, but if we’re talking about hair, there was a haircut that basically everyone loved: both men and women jumped on the mullet bandwagon (Well, hello, David Bowie). Fun fact: the word “mullet” comes from Mugilidae fish, whose main characteristic is that they are short in the front and long in the back.
But, now that I think about it, there were a few celebrities who embraced the trend recently, like Zendaya, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus. Could it be that the mullet never really went anywhere?
2020 was an unprecedented year that had most people staying home every day. And, since we couldn’t go out, we had to come up with ways to keep ourselves busy (I swear I watched almost every series on Netflix), but we also had to find substitutes for the services that we used to pay for, like food (many of us finally learned to cook), our nails, and of course, hair care. Two of the most popular Google searches of the year were: “how to cut your hair at home” and “how to cut your bangs.”
Were you one of those people who tried something new with their hair in 2020? I think we all did, or at least tried. We learned to dye it at home, we tried new and bolder styles, and we even cut it ourselves. The mullet is one of the easiest haircuts out there, so it’s very simple to do it yourself. Or maybe it’s not that easy, and you won’t get it perfect, but really, who’s going to see it?
From the looks of it, 2021 won’t be that much different. The pandemic is not over yet, and one of the main measures to keep everyone safe is to stay home, so it’s a great opportunity to experiment, dye it the color you always wanted, or even to cut it yourself without worrying that it’ll be a disaster. After all, no one will notice because you’ll be home all the time, so let it grow or chop it off, and explore all the possibilities that your hair has to offer.
