The 2024 Oscars Red Carpet kicked off with a bang, and not just because of the fabulous outfits worn by celebrities or the protests some artists like Billie Eilish staged with meaningful details like pins in support of Palestine. Still, due to the grand opening featuring the Osage indigenous people, who showcased vibrant traditional attire, their story was recently spotlighted in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon.
Who Are the Osage Indigenous People?
They were one of the predominant tribes in North America, with influence spanning parts of present-day Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. They fought alongside the French and against the Spanish for control of the Mississippi region in the 18th century and participated in the Civil War. They also played active roles in the U.S. military during both World Wars.
The Osage Nation became one of the wealthiest indigenous peoples thanks to the early 20th-century oil boom. In 1923, the Osage amassed a fortune of $30 million in royalties, equivalent to approximately $540 million today. However, racism, one of the world’s most toxic poisons, plagued native lands. Due to their economic prosperity, many white settlers became envious, claiming that the Osage couldn’t handle such wealth. Consequently, white guardians were imposed to oversee how the Osage spent their money.
Returning to the Oscars, the presentation of the Osage Nation at an event dominated by white supremacy is immensely significant. We are thrilled that dissenting voices are being heard. A group of Native American dancers and singers from the Osage tribe stood out, wearing their ceremonial attire. It’s worth noting that one of the nominees for Best Actress was Lily Gladstone, marking the first time a Native American woman has received such a nomination.
