Los Furbys fueron un fenómeno mundial

How wonderful it was to walk through the toy store and come across those little furry creatures that you pushed a button on and they did something funny, like the Furbys, do you remember them?

This toy became a worldwide phenomenon. When it came out by the end of the 90s; everyone wanted one of these robotic and odd creatures to adopt as pets. Although some preferred them far away because they felt they were disturbing.

The Furbys were similar to the gremlins; they had a cute yet strange look and, for many they were considered adorable, plus you could interact with them, a real novelty at that time, until one day, out of nowhere, they stopped being the protagonists of the toy stores.

25 years after its successful launch, Hasbro announced its return. This has new adults excited; those who grew up with these toys can now introduce them to their children, nephews, nieces, godchildren, etc.

Furby que fue de ellos - what became of the furby, the most disturbing toy of the 90s?

Why Did the Furby Disappear?

With the Furbys, children were in control; it was something they loved. These toys would start speaking their own language (Furbish), but as the owner spent time with them, he would substitute words that sounded strange for those of the user’s language. You could even make it communicate with those of your friends. Thanks to its technology, the Furby represented for these generations much more than a simple toy, it became a companion for adventures.

Was the Furby Used for Espionage?

Due to its innovative system, the National Security Agency (NSA) banned its sale in the United States of America (USA), believing that some would take advantage of its popularity to spy on classified conversations. Tiger Electronic, creators of the Furbys before selling them to Hasbro, denied the NSA’s paste accusations, assuring that although it is an intelligent toy, it was not capable of recording or imitating voices.

Health Effects?

It seemed that the companies were determined to get the Furbys off the market. In 2000, it was also said that the toy interfered with electronic medical equipment, another theory disproved by health scientists in Canada.

No Longer Entertaining

Although in the late 1990s, the Furby became the favorite toy of children, selling more than 27 million in the first year of its launch, today, the new generations seem to show no interest in these products; they now like consoles and what they can do with the devices. Five years after coming to the market, Hasbro bought the rights from Tiger Electronic. The Furbys are no longer so popular, but still walking down the aisles of toy stores we can see these beings that became great friends for many children of the 90s (even if they were suddenly scary).

What Animal Is the Furby?

Its appearance could be somewhat strange in the eyes of many. The creators explained that it was a mixture of several animals, among which the owl, bat, mouse, and even a cat stood out. Although almost everyone agreed that they were relatives of the gremlins, those monsters that appeared in the movie with the same name. They started as cute creatures, but if the rules for their care were not respected, their appearance and attitude became monstrous.

How Much Does a Furby Cost and Where to Buy One?

Some took it upon themselves to collect the different versions of the Furbys, and there were too many of them. If you are a lover of the classic 90s one, you can find these toys on some online sales pages such as eBay and Amazon.

The price varies with the version, but you will find models ranging from 50 to more than 350 dollars. The most sought-after is the original (in box), the one that came out in 1998, with blue eyes, pink bars, white feet, and a black body. We still remember those days when you could get one for 25 dollars!

Undoubtedly, the Furbys, far from everything they could have meant to the children of the ’90s, marked a before and after in the history of toys.
