Warning issued for women about serious risks of iud insertion

Federal authorities in the U.S. have issued a landmark recommendation for women in the country to carefully consider whether the IUD insertion is their best option as a contraceptive method.

In the wake of multiple complaints in recent weeks regarding excruciating pain, the U.S. has launched a campaign to require doctors to inform women about pain management and consider various anesthetics before the procedure.

Information about the new warning was released by the New York Times.

Two Types of IUD

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a small plastic device in the shape of a “T” that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of IUDs:

Copper IUDs: This type of IUD releases small amounts of copper into the uterus, creating a hostile environment for sperm and preventing fertilization of the egg. Copper can also alter the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for the fertilized egg to implant.

Hormonal IUD: This IUD releases a hormone called levonorgestrel (a type of progestin) that thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to pass through, and also thins the lining of the uterus, reducing the chances of implantation.

Both types of IUDs are long-acting, highly effective forms of birth control that can prevent pregnancy for several years. However, IUD insertion and removal are the big topic of debate in the United States.

Viral iud removal videos

The controversy surrounding the IUD has been unleashed in the United States after several videos went viral showing how painful the procedure to insert the device is. The reactions have put the authorities in that country on alert.

According to the New York Times report, the authorities in the United States have received several complaints in which doctors in that country are accused of ignoring the discomfort for women. So in an unprecedented move, federal health officials have recommended that doctors counsel women on pain management before the procedure.

This update to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines could lead doctors to take pain more seriously and consider using anesthetics more often, experts say.

As the number of women opting for IUDs has increased, so have demands for doctors to address the discomfort and severe pain associated with the procedure.

The problem for officials is that, according to the documents they received, the number of doctors who actually explain to women effective strategies for managing that pain is minimal. According to the New York Times report, “fewer than 5 percent of doctors offered a local anesthetic injection during the procedure, with many opting instead to prescribe over-the-counter painkillers, which have been shown to be less effective.”

Following the federal alert, new mandatory guidelines for physicians expand the pain relief options available to women during the procedure. Options now include numbing gels, creams and sprays.
