Cucumbers Recalled Nationwide Over Salmonella Risk

The recall of whole cucumbers from Florida and that were shipped to several states, has put U.S. health authorities on alert, after this was associated with an outbreak of Salmonella that would be affecting much of the country.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of the cucumbers, which were distributed to 14 affected states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The public has asked for information on whether this Salmonella outbreak has anything to do with cucumbers, so the FDA has begun investigating 141 reported cases of Salmonella that could be related to the recalled food.

“The FDA is conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if this sample is related to an ongoing investigation into a Salmonella outbreak.”

This means that the contaminated cucumbers are still being investigated to find out where the Salmonella could have come from.

According to wilton center, the us consumes 1. 6 million metric tons of cucumbers each year and produces 636,000 tons.

FDA Continues to Investigate Whether Cucumbers Are Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

In some states, the recall of cucumbers was voluntary, because they are still investigating whether all cucumbers from Florida are possibly contaminated with salmonella, however, it was done out of an abundance of caution while we continue to find out where the cucumbers could have been contaminated.

The FDA has also reported that so far, it could not be generalized that all the cucumbers that left the state of Florida and were distributed throughout almost the entire country are contaminated with salmonella and have to do with the reporting of several cases.

It should be noted that the mandatory withdrawals of any food respond to the fact that they could cause serious diseases or death, but not in this case. That is why the health authorities reiterate that so far, the withdrawal has been voluntary.

Some fresh produce, particularly imported varieties, may be irrigated in the field or washed during processing with water contaminated with salmonella.

As additional information to the population, he highlights that if you are concerned about the cucumbers you have at home now, you should know that a cucumber has a shelf life of 10 to 14 days, so it is very unlikely that these cucumbers are still available on the market, since the cucumbers that are possibly contaminated were shipped from May 17 to 21.
