Iberostar punta mita - why go to punta de mita and where to stay for the best experience

There’s nothing like the beach for relaxation, and Punta de Mita, in Nayarit, Mexico, is an option that many of us don’t have on our radar but is completely worth it. I’ll explain why and share our experience at the Iberostar Selection Playa Mita resort.

Let’s Talk About Punta de Mita and Nayarit

Why the Beaches of Nayarit?

Located in the stunning Riviera Nayarit, Punta de Mita is a unique corner of the Mexican Pacific that combines white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a vibrant local culture. The Wixárika (Huichol) culture can be seen in the hospitality, cuisine, decor, and I’d say in the overall energy of the area.

Punta de Mita is approximately 40 kilometers north of Puerto Vallarta International Airport, about a 60 to 90-minute drive, making it easily accessible for travelers from around the world.

One of the great advantages of Punta de Mita is the diversity of experiences it offers. Visitors can enjoy water activities such as snorkeling, paddleboarding, and whale watching in season. For golf enthusiasts, the destination boasts world-class courses with unparalleled panoramic ocean views.

It’s even a three-in-one destination: you can stay in Punta de Mita and visit nearby towns and cities like Puerto Vallarta or Sayulita.

Our Experience at Iberostar Selection Playa Mita

We were lucky to stay at Iberostar Selection Playa Mita and, as we already mentioned, this resort positively changed everything you might think about large all-inclusive hotels. I’ll explain in three key points.

1. The Experience Feels Local, Not Generic

One issue I have with large resorts is that it doesn’t matter if you’re in Cancun, Tulum, Los Cabos, or Puerto Vallarta: the spaces look the same, the food and drinks are the same, the music, the smells. Everything is the same, except for guacamole or tequila shots reminding you that you’re in Mexico.

Iberostar is committed to promoting circular and local economies, so among its options, we always found dishes with endemic and seasonal ingredients. Yes, there are hamburgers, but there are also tortas ahogadas.

Additionally, the decor and ambiance also incorporate various elements of Wixárika (Huichol) culture in a respectful and natural way.

2. Zero Eco-Anxiety

The environmental impact of vacationing at large resorts can generate guilt and anxiety for some. Iberostar is doing everything possible to address and minimize this impact.

To start, there are no single-use plastics—none! For example, in the rooms, there are glass bottles that you can refill with fresh, potable water at stations distributed throughout the hotel. I loved it.

By promoting local economy, they are reducing the transportation of food and resources. They also give special treatment to their waste, and what impressed me most is the technology they use to ensure no food is wasted, based on Artificial Intelligence.

Their plan is to be waste-free by 2025 and carbon neutral by 2030.

3. Complementary Experiences

Wow, the number of additional activities and spaces this resort offers. There’s a theater, a disco, various types of restaurants, crafts, a library for working, bars, terraces, a spa, a gym, a kids club, excursions, a golf club, and tequila tastings. There is something for everyone.

Some activities are included, others require a fee, but in most cases, it is absolutely reasonable.

I tried the tequila tasting and it was a delight. I learned, had fun, and recommend it 100%. It costs from $40 USD per person.
