A 51-year-old man who traveled to South Africa is the first positive case of the Omicron variant in Mexico.
This Friday, the health authorities in Mexico confirmed the first positive case of the Omicron variant. A 51-year-old man, who returned from a trip to South Africa, was admitted to a hospital in Mexico City and his infection with the new variant of the coronavirus has already been confirmed.
Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, confirmed the news that was already anticipated from the early hours of this Friday.
As has happened in most of the reported Omicron cases in the world, the contagion occurred in South Africa.
For several days, after the first case was detected by omicron at the international level, the World Health Organization has indicated that the new variant originated precisely in the territories to the south of the African continent.
“The first positive case of the Omicron variant in Mexico is a 51-year-old person from South Africa. He has a mild illness and voluntarily checked himself into a private hospital in Mexico City to avoid contagion. The prognosis for his recovery is favorable”, was the message from López-Gatell on his Twitter account.
The health authorities in Mexico recommended the population not to fall into a state of alarm, since, at the moment, the studies on the Omicron variant are at an early stage.
“Since November 26, we established a virological surveillance protocol that early identifies cases of covid-19 in people arriving from any country. Closing borders and blocking people or goods are not useful measures to contain the variants. The World Health Organization states that vaccination continues to be essential to reduce the risk of hospitalization and death. We call for you to remain calm and continue to apply measures to avoid contagion. Healthy distance, use of face masks, label sneezes and frequent hand washing, “said the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion.
