They are the ones who make the most important decisions in their families and the ones who are always trying to find the best ways for their children to have a better life. And if we talk about Latino households in the US, Latina mothers are a force, according to Nathalie Rayes, president and CEO of the Latino Victory Project.

With this idea in mind, the organization Rayes leads developed the campaign #VoteLikeAMadre, which aims to encourage Latina moms to come together for their children and promise to vote for climate change initiatives, one of Latinos’ top concerns at the polls.

This initiative already has the support of celebrity Latina moms, such as Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria Bastón, Zoe Saldaña, Joy Huerta, Jordana Brewster, and Karla Souza.

“Our tactic is to use the CEOs of the household, las que mandan en la casa (the ones who rule the house), to really change the dynamic in this country. Latina mothers will change the course of the election and prioritize climate as one of the most challenging issues in our country”, says Rayes in an interview with CC+.

The campaign wants every Latina mom to register to vote and vote early, as well as on Election Day on November 3rd, and also wants these mothers to encourage their families and neighbors to do the same, considering the political force that Latinos represent as the largest minority in the US, with more than 30 million Latinos as eligible voters.

“Knowing that climate change for Latinos is one of the top issues, we really want to ensure that mothers that care so much about their children, do engage their communities and come out and vote. So we want them to make a pinky promise to their children and to the world really on the importance of climate, of living in an environment that healthier for their children and their children’s children”, Rayes added.

Some other issues that worry Latinos in the US and that will be decisive in the ballot results on the upcoming elections, according to Rayes, are jobs, education, and healthcare, considering that Covid-19 has particularly affected Latinos.

How can you join #VoteLikeAMadre?

1. Make a pinky promise with your kids to fight climate change. Feel free to decorate your nail as a symbol of your promise.

2. Post the pinky promise on social media channels and challenge your friends to do the same, using #VoteLikeAMadre.

3. Make a plan to register to vote and vote on November 3 (or earlier depending on dates in your area).

Latino Victory Project is an organization that works to grow Latino political power, by increasing Latino representation at every level of government.
