Have you ever heard of the term ‘Pick Me Girl’? If not, don’t worry, because even if you haven’t heard of it, it is very certain that at least once in your life you have met a woman who could fit perfectly into this concept. Although the term has existed for several years, in recent months it has become more relevant, especially due to social networks such as TikTok, Instagram, and X, formerly Twitter.
Since the launch of Barbie, the concept has re-emerged very strongly, because after the film’s premiere, women who refused to see the film or who did not like it were called ‘Pick Me, Girl’. However, behind this concept lies a discussion that over the years has done nothing but separate women.
What is a ‘Pick Me Girl’?
A ‘Pick Me Girl‘ is a young woman who challenges traditional gender roles, adopting stereotypically masculine behaviors. According to the Urban Dictionary, these people seek male attention and approval in everything they say and do, although to achieve this they often do less to those who do not act or think like them. Well, her goal is to stand out from the rest of the women, criticizing behaviors considered feminine in search of constant approval. It is for this reason that women who fit this description refuse to wear pink and watch princess movies or romantic comedies, preferring to play soccer or video games.

How did the concept come about?
Its origin is related to pop culture, since the term arose from an episode of the second season of Grey’s Anatomy, in which the character of Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, begs Derek to leave his wife and choose her, with the already immortalized phrase: “Pick me, choose me, love me”. From there, the famous concept became popular again with the song “You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift.
The concept of separating women
The real danger of the term ‘Pick Me Girl’ is that over time it has generated a negative impact on the perception of women. This label is harmful because instead of uniting women, it creates rivalry between them and sets unrealistic standards. And it is precisely for this reason that, on both sides, it is best to recognize that diversity among women is what gives us strength and identity.
