Gen z crying phenomenon - people keep hating on gen z for crying online—let us explain

Today in things that boomers may not understand, I finally decided to explain to you why it is so normal for Gen Z to record ourselves crying or taking our crying selfie. And maybe you’re one of those who think that it is ridiculous, or that we don’t have self respect, but believe me when I tell you that in reality it is so much more than that.

With the years, it has turned more “normal” to watch people and specially Gen Z girls posting pictures of themselves crying or maybe recording a short video of them with the tears in their cheeks.

This is one of the things we haven’t stolen from celebrities, despite some of them doing that too. Examples of this are Justin Bieber, Bella Hadid, Miley Cyrus, Dove Cameron and Bad Bunny.

For Gen Z, navigating negative emotions is uncharted territory we’re finally exploring without the guilt that weighed down previous generations. Posting a crying selfie or recording a teary-eyed video isn’t just a trend—it’s a way of saying, “Hey, I’m human, and this is my reality right now.”

Sure, it might not be the gold standard of emotional coping mechanisms, but it’s a start. And let’s be real, there’s nothing inherently wrong with it.

The criticism of these posts often says more about the people making the comments than the ones sharing their raw emotions. Maybe it’s time we stop policing how others express themselves and let people live their lives.

At its core, social media for Gen Z feels more like a personal space than a public one—a digital journal, if you will. This could explain why sharing something as vulnerable as a crying moment feels natural to us.

And guess what? There’s no solid evidence proving that documenting your tears is either good or bad for your mental health. So, if it works for us, maybe that’s all that matters. Instead of judging, maybe we should shift our focus to creating a space where people feel safe enough to be real, even if it means shedding a few tears online.
