I know, we fell for that propaganda too, ChatGPT was one of the best things that happens to humans as it helps us with a lot of work and sped up processes we took too much time back in time. Like it or not, the AI is staying, and probably for the rest of our lives. But that doesn’t mean it is the best thing for our creativity or our ability to solve problems, and even less for our brains.
New Study Found the Real Damage ChatGPT is Doing to Your Brain
But what happened? Well, a recent research from MIT highly suggests that relying heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT for tasks such as writing essays may reduce brain engagement over time, especially when used passively or excessively. The study found that participants who used ChatGPT showed lower brain activity compared to those who used Google or wrote unaided. They had weaker memory recall, struggled to quote their own writing, and felt less ownership over their work.

Over time, this led to something researchers called “cognitive debt”—a kind of mental atrophy from underuse of critical and outsourcing thinking to AI tools like ChatGPT. Just like financial debt accumulates when you borrow money, cognitive debt builds up when you consistently let machines do the heavy lifting for your brain.

Signs You Might Be Accruing Cognitive Debt
These aren’t dramatic symptoms, but subtle shifts that build over time:
- Memory fog: You struggle to recall things you’ve written or read—even if they were recent.
- Mental passivity: You find yourself defaulting to AI for answers without even trying to think it through first.
- Loss of ownership: You don’t feel connected to your own work or ideas—it’s like they came from “somewhere else.”
- Weaker problem-solving: Tasks that once felt easy now seem harder to tackle without assistance.
- Flat creativity: Your ideas feel more generic or derivative, lacking your usual spark or originality.
- Reduced confidence: You hesitate to trust your own judgment or instincts, even in areas you used to feel strong in.

Not at all, it is more like the damage you’re doing to yourself, something we can absolutely recommend is to try not to use it for a while if you feel you start to depend on it. Challenge yourself in order to engage your own creativity and critical thinking. This way you’ll feel secure again about your own skills. As we said, AI like ChatGPT is here to stay, and it’s cool because it helps us a lot, but remember you were born without it and you can live a life without it too.
