After a cylindrical metal object from the International Space Station punctured a Florida family’s home, the owners decided to sue NASA over the incident.
The Otero Florida family is suing NASA for more than $80K
The Naples, Florida-based family told The Washington Post that Otero came across the charred space debris, smaller than a soup can, embedded in the wall and said he knew immediately that it “came from space.”
The family’s lawyer, Mica Nguyen, spoke about the relevance of the incident at this moment in history:
“The family’s lawyer, Mica Nguyen, spoke about the relevance of the incident at this moment in history. My clients are seeking adequate compensation to account for the stress and impact that this event had on their lives,” she said.

The legal expert also mentioned that Alejandro Otero, the 19-year-old son, was at the residence at the time of the incident last March, however, fortunately he was unharmed:
“They are grateful that no one sustained physical injuries from this incident, but a ‘near miss’ situation such as this could have been catastrophic.”
This claim against NASA seeks to recover damages including uninsured property damage, emotional and mental distress, and other damages.
The family is also seeking compensation of more than $80,000. This was confirmed by the lawyer in an email sent to The Washington Post.

Under the Federal Tort Claims Act, NASA has six months to respond to the lawsuit. However, NASA was contacted by The Washington Post and has not received a response.
