The Northeast U.S. is facing up an overwhelming invasion of giant, venomous spiders with 4-inch-long legs that can essentially parachute through the air.

This year, New Jersey Pest Control had alerted the public about the arrival of Joro spiders, emphasizing that these spiders will be “hard to miss” due to the females’ leg span of up to 4 inches and their striking yellow and grey bodies.

The company says that what makes them unique, however, is their ability to fly, a rare trait among spiders. “While not accurate flight in the avian sense, Joro spiders utilize a technique known as ballooning, where they release silk threads into the air, allowing them to be carried by the wind.”

José R. Ramírez-Garofalo, an ecologist at Rutgers University’s Lockwood Lab and the president of Protectors of Pine Oak Woods on Staten Island, mentioned to SI Live that “it’s a matter of when, not if” the spiders will show up in New York and New Jersey.

A peer-reviewed study from last October by invasive species expert David Coyle confirmed that this species is “here to stay.”

The Asian Joro spiders arrived to North Georgia around 2010 and have been spreading ever since. Experts have cautioned that the spiders might reach New York since 2022, though none have been spotted yet.

“Anyone that doesn’t sort of like all the creepy crawly things, this has all of the characteristics that makes them squeamish,” Coyle previously told CBS News, adding in a press release that “data show that this spider is going to be able to inhabit most of the eastern U.S..”

“It shows that their comfort area in their native range matches up very well with much of North America.”

People have reported sightings of Joro spiders across the eastern U.S., including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio.

New York is “right in the middle of where they like to be,” University of Georgia researcher Andy Davis told The New York Times in December. He predicts the spiders could appear across New York and nearby states this summer any day by now.

“They seem to be OK with living in a city,” Davis added, noting that he’s seen Joro spiders on street lamps and telephone poles, places “where regular spiders wouldn’t be caught dead.”

Although the spiders are venomous, Coyle reassures that they don’t pose a threat to humans. The venom is meant for the insects caught in their webs, like butterflies, wasps, and cockroaches. They might, however, threaten native spider species.

“We have no evidence that they’ve done any damage to a person or a pet,” he said.
