A SpaceX Starship prototype exploded late Wednesday night during a static-fire test at the company’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, marking the latest in a string of failures in Elon Musk’s high-stakes push to send humans to Mars.
According to local authorities, Starship Ship 36 underwent a “catastrophic failure” just after 11 p.m. CT, erupting into a towering fireball while attached to the launch mount. The explosion was caught on video and later shared by Cameron County officials, who confirmed the test was part of a routine ground procedure.
What Happened—and What SpaceX Is Saying
SpaceX acknowledged the incident on social media, stating that the prototype “experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand” ahead of its planned 10th flight. The company did not elaborate on the technical cause of the failure but assured that:
“A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for.”
They also advised locals to stay away from the site while “safing operations” continue. No injuries have been reported.
The static fire test is a key step before launch, involving the brief ignition of the Super Heavy booster engines while the rocket remains anchored to the ground. These rehearsals are designed to validate systems and engine performance without leaving the pad—though in this case, it ended in disaster.

Why This Matters
At 123 meters tall, Starship is the largest and most powerful rocket ever built, with a payload capacity of up to 150 metric tonnes. It’s central to Musk’s vision of creating a fully reusable vehicle capable of transporting cargo and humans to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
But the journey has been far from smooth. A prototype exploded over the Indian Ocean in May, while previous launches ended with midair disintegration and booster failures. Despite this, SpaceX remains committed to its iterative approach.
