If you have ever tried to watch an astronomical event in your life, you probably know how frustrating and hard it can be. You never remember exactly what to do, where to look, or what to expect. And then, every media outlet talks about how spectacular the meteor shower will be, for instance, but few of them explain the details you need to know to make it a truly remarkable experience.
We will be publishing a series of articles about the astronomical events you can expect in 2019, so keep this calendar on hand for a quick guide into the events that will happen up in the skies this year.
Lunar eclipse and Super Moon (January 20th and 21st)
The first eclipse of the year will happen before the end of January, when the shadow of the Earth is projected onto the Moon. This event will be completely visible from the entire American continent. The partial eclipse will begin on January 20th at 10:33 PM EST and will peak at 01:36 January 21st, so stay up late!
Super Moon (January 19th)
On the night of February 19th, you will be able to see the largest Moon of the year. The distance between our planet and its natural satellite will be shorter than on any other day of the year, therefore making this the perfect occasion to take pictures and to see the craters and valleys on the Moon.
Meteor Shower Eta Aquariid (May 6th)
The meteor shower left behind by the remains of the Halley Comet trail will show up in the sky during the first days of May 2019. Although it is not a massive shower, the moon will be just about to enter the new moon phase. Therefore, the darkness will be almost perfect to make it visible.
Jupiter at opposition (June 10th)
The best moment of the year to watch Jupiter is during the night of June 10th, when the gas giant finds itself opposed to the Sun, thus reaching the closest point to Earth. To find it, look for the brightest star between the Scorpio and Ophiuchus constellations.
Saturn at opposition (July 9th)
Just one month after Jupiter, another planet will be visible to the naked eye, and it will look as a bright star right in the Sagittarius constellation.
