A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland after weeks of intense seismic activity. Some 4,000 people were previously evacuated from the fishing town of Grindavik and the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa was closed. The eruption began north of the city at 10:17 p.m. local time (22:17 GMT), according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. The region surrounding the capital, Reykjavík, has seen an increase in seismic activity since late October.

One of the main concerns of the Icelandic authorities is the emission of sulfur dioxide, which can reach levels dangerous to health. So far, no deaths or injuries have been reported due to the eruption. Satellite data indicates that this time “the magma flow is double that observed in the 2021 episode,” explained Hjorleifsson, from the Icelandic Meteorological Office. The surroundings of the Fagradalsfjallse volcano were filled with rivers of lava descending the mountain, a situation reminiscent of the recent eruption of Cumbre Vieja, on La Palma (Canary Islands).
