The movie Barbie, directed by American filmmaker Greta Gerwig, along with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, was one of the most successful films of 2023, giving rise to the internet phenomenon “barbenheimer” that mobilized millions of viewers to theaters. And although its run at the Oscars wasn’t as successful as expected, the film continues to provoke various reactions and comments, long after its release. In an interview for Allure magazine recently, Shakira revealed that her children didn’t like the movie, a stance with which she agrees.

Why Did Shakira and Her Kids Hate Barbie?
“My kids absolutely hated it. They felt it was emasculating. And I agree, to some extent. I’m raising two boys. I want them to feel powerful too, respecting women. I like pop culture when it tries to empower women without depriving men of their ability to be men, to protect and provide as well,” she said.
“I believe, continued, in giving women all the tools and confidence that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I believe men have a purpose in society and women also have another purpose. We complement each other and that complement should not be lost.”

Following these statements, TMZ claimed that Shakira seemed to be taking on conservative stances “that have been advocated about Barbie for several months. Here, it would seem that she is somewhat conservative… at least on this particular issue,” the outlet published.
However, in the Allure interview, the Colombian explored various topics such as female empowerment, feminism, and femininity: “Eva was a story created by misogynists to put women in the little box where we have to stay silent, not say what we think, and not be a catalyst for change. To keep things as they are.”
“I think there’s something refreshing about women when they manage to be themselves and not apologize. Because we’ve had to apologize so many damn times in the past,” she added.
