Being awarded the most important person of the year comes with a juicy interview that aims to explore the nature of the individual and the key to their success. However, it can go beyond that and explore, as well, the most challenging moments of their career. This wasn’t the exception for Tay Tay, who recalled the old beef with Kanye West and then wife Kim Kardashian, and the infamous phone call incident.
What Happened Between Taylor, Kanye, and Kim?
Let’s go back in time to that scandalous 2016; a year that broke Taylor’s soul and inspired her to release her sixth album Reputation. That year Kanye West released the song “Famous,” with a line that says “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.”
Naturally, this sparked outrage among Taylor fans, who felt he was being disrespectful to her (once again), to which the rapper replied that Taylor had authorized the line after having a long phone conversation. Taylor Swift’s reputation was ruined, and social media blasted her and called her a liar when she said that didn’t happen. Enter Kim Kardashian.
The business mogul and reality show star uploaded bits from the alleged phone call with Taylor Swift, but as time passed, and the entire phone conversation was leaked, it was proven that the couple had indeed tricked the recording to make Taylor sound like she had approved such a horrible line. Taylor succeeded with her Reputation album, and Kanye and Kim were slammed by her fans (🐍🐍🐍🐍). But in the meantime, it all became a living hell for Taylor.
What Did Taylor Swift Say About Kim and Kanye?
In this year’s TIME Magazine interview, Taylor remembered that moment as one of the worst episodes in her life: “My career was taken away from me.” This incident and the selling of her music catalog were “two horrendous things that happened to me. The first was getting canceled within an inch of my life and sanity. The second was having my life’s work taken away from me by someone who hates me.”
About the infamous phone call, she said: “You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar. That took me down psychologically to a place I’d never been before. I moved to a foreign country. I didn’t leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard.”
But if there’s something Taylor Swift knows very well is that eventually “Karma’s gonna track you down.” Being the queen she is, she elegantly declared that her “response to anything that happens, good or bad, is to keep making things. Keep making art … But I’ve also learned there’s no point in actively trying to quote-unquote defeat your enemies. Trash takes itself out every single time.”
