The rumor appears to have been circulating online for quite some time. It gained traction in 2020 when a Hollywood gossip blog called Crazy Days and Nights posted a story from an anonymous reader detailing a strange encounter with a movie star.
One user reported that Tom Cruise was wearing 2 masks and knew it was him because he had security with him and because he heard he would be filming in the city.
The description led many to speculate that the star in question was Tom Cruise. According to the account, the actor reportedly spent a considerable amount of time inspecting different fish at a supermarket in Italy before selecting a raw sea bass. He allegedly asked for it unwrapped, took it into the restroom, and emerged 10 minutes later without the fish.
Interestingly, the timeline and location match up with when Tom Cruise was filming Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning in Italy. Although the story sounds absurd and ends there, more and more people started coming forward with similar tales.
Others also claimed that they saw him do something similar in 2016 in a supermarket in Los Angeles.
One of the strangest testimonies was one in which someone from a production said that the actor took a long time because he “carefully examined each fish” while putting it on a scale. Afterwards he asked that they not wrap it, which made him think that it was part of the production props.
