"I Lost Everything Except My Sense Of Humor": Jamie Foxx Reveals Why He Disappeared From The Spotlight

For nearly two years, speculation swirled about the mysterious health crisis that led Jamie Foxx to step away from the spotlight following a “medical complication.”

Known for his charisma, the actor kept the details of his April 2023 hospitalization under wraps—until now. In his new Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, Jamie opens up about the life-altering event.

It was no minor incident; Foxx suffered a brain hemorrhage that led to a stroke while filming Back in Action in Atlanta.

With his trademark humor, Foxx recounts in the special how it all began. As it turns out, the experience was far more terrifying than anyone imagined:

“On April 11, I had a severe headache and asked my daughter for an aspirin. That’s when I realized—when you’re having a medical emergency, your kids have no clue what to do!”

Before he could take the aspirin, Foxx lost consciousness. He didn’t wake up until three weeks later. During that critical time, his sister, Deidra Dixon, took charge, rushing him to Piedmont Hospital, where doctors acted swiftly to save his life.

They performed emergency surgery and warned the family of a challenging road ahead. While they were optimistic about his recovery, the year that followed would test him in unimaginable ways.

Jamie Foxx’s Recovery

Foxx regained consciousness on May 4 at a rehab facility in Chicago, confused and in a wheelchair.

“I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t wipe my own butt… I lost everything except my sense of humor. If I could keep laughing, I knew I could keep going,” Foxx recalled.

His recovery was long and grueling, but he persevered. Using the Netflix special as a platform, he candidly shared his journey.

The documentary doesn’t just chronicle his physical and emotional recovery; it also addresses the bizarre rumors that circulated in his absence, from cloning conspiracies to connections with controversial public figures.

In What Had Happened Was…, Jamie also expressed gratitude to his family for fiercely guarding his privacy during those harrowing months. “They didn’t want you to see me like that. And I didn’t want that either,” he admitted.

Now, with his health restored and exciting new projects on the horizon, Foxx proves he’s back and stronger than ever.

Through humor, music, and heartfelt moments, Jamie uses his special to close this challenging chapter, reminding audiences that even in the darkest times, humor and love can be life’s greatest saviors.

With projects like Tin Soldier and Back in Action lined up, Foxx leaves no doubt—his return is as powerful as his resolve.
