On social platforms she was branded as “treacherous” and “scab;” but besides the criticism and hate on the Internet, it seems that her decision to go back to work has already started to have serious consequences. After announcing the recording of her first episode, Drew Barrymore was ruled out as a presenter of the National Book Award ceremony.
“In light of the announcement that The Drew Barrymore Show will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony,” said the National Book Foundation in a statement.
The relaunching of Drew’s show on CBS poses no problem with the striking actors’ guild because it is governed by a separate contract from the Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Radio, and Television Artists, which was renewed and ratified last year. However, it does require at least three screenwriters who are members of the union that has been demonstrating since early May.
“The only ones I know for sure that aren’t coming back are the three WGA screenwriters. I can’t speak for the rest (…) I think, first of all, this is obviously much bigger than The Drew Barrymore Show and the screenwriters. We’re standing here with our union, and we feel really good and excited to always be with our union,” said Chelsea White, one of the show’s writers.
The fourth season of the E.T. actress’ show is scheduled to air beginning September 18.

“I own this choice,” Barrymore stressed, assuring that she would avoid promoting work amid a strike. “I want to be there to offer what writers do so well, which is a way to unite us or help us make sense of the human experience,” she added.
At the start of the strike, the actress resigned from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards in solidarity with the screenwriters and actors involved. However, Drew Barrymore has disappointed her fans, who consider that she turned her back on her colleagues, who maintain this strike for the benefit of all.
