Anya Taylor-Joy will portray one of the most iconic female characters in recent cinema: Furiosa, in the latest installment of the Mad Max saga. However, it has recently been reported that out of the two hours and 30 minutes of the film’s runtime, the actress only has 30 lines of dialogue, despite being the protagonist.
Recently, the film’s director, George Miller, explained in an interview with The Telegraph why he decided to keep the dialogue to a minimum. It’s worth noting that this new installment is a prequel to the 2015 hit ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,‘ focusing on Furiosa’s youth, taking viewers through 15 years of her life, from childhood to her rise.
The Australian director defended his approach by prioritizing action and visual expression to tell the story over dialogue.
“The problem with dialogue is that it tends to slow things down, and cinema is a medium often best enjoyed at high speed,” he told the publication.
The lack of dialogue could lead to more action, such as a 15-minute action sequence that took 200 specialists 78 days to film, which is a crucial moment for Taylor-Joy’s character. “George and I had extensive conversations about why this particular scene was so long,” the actress told Total Film.
The actress also mentioned in an interview with The New York Times that she spent ‘months’ without speaking on set and struggled to scream on camera: “I’ve never been more alone than making that movie,” she said “I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard”

“I’m a firm advocate of female rage,“ added the actress about her character and her frustration with the representation of women in films, who often endure hardships and only manage to shed a single tear. She told the director that Furiosa deserved an eruption of emotion.
When will Furiosa premiere?
Furiosa will be released in cinemas on 24th May 2024, but before then, it will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 15th May.
The film follows Furiosa’s story leading up to the events that happened in Mad Max: Fury Road set to cover a timespan of 15 years. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth as Dementus and Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack.
