George Lucas Confesses Netflix Was To Blame For Selling Star Wars

George Lucas became a trend over the weekend after making a glorious appearance at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and receiving an honorary Palme d’Or for his work and contributions to the world of science fiction cinema.

During the interview, the filmmaker reminisced about his work as the mastermind behind Star Wars, from the inspirations he drew on to give us one of the greatest franchises of all time, to how he has received criticism from fans about the prequels to the saga.

“They were always children’s movies,” said George Lucas, adding that many of the fans who hated the Star Wars prequels surely did so because they saw the original trilogy as children, and now that they had grown up, they expected to see more mature stories, however, the films were always meant to speak to a child audience.

Netflix would be the real reason why George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney

At the same conference, Goear Lucas revealed the real reasons why he decided to sell the Star Wars and Lucasfilm brand to Disney in 2012, and that is that he saw something that very few had considered at the time: the rise of the streaming world, led mainly by Netflix.

“Streaming is really powerful, and it’s great, it’s really improved the theater business a lot because the theater business… We could see the problems, and it didn’t look good. So everyone was looking to save it, but no one knew that streaming would. And that’s when Netflix took off, and at that point, I said, ‘I don’t know what’s going to happen with this, there’s going to be a gigantic transition in the business, I don’t know much about it,’ and I sold the company, and I retired.”

Disney, for better or worse, according to fans, made Star Wars a whole universe, by producing the sequels, spin offs, series, animations, etc., and it doesn’t seem that the plans are going to end, because this is one of the most expensive and profitable franchises in history, only below Mario Bros, some other Nintendo trademarks,  and Disney itself.
