James Gunn is determined to transform the DCU into an exciting and successful brand, and the people he’s casting into his productions are proof of that. As confirmed by Gunn himself, the new DC universe has added Milly Alcock to its lines in the role of Kara, aka Supergirl, aka the Woman of Steel.

The Australian actress blew our minds with her role of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first episodes of House of the Dragon, proving to be a very powerful face in the industry, now she’s landed one of the most desired and beloved DC Comics characters, the one and only Supergirl.

Rumor had it, that Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly (who voiced Supergirl in the animated films Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths), were the big favorites to play the iconic Woman of Steel. However, after doing an impressive job on her screen tests, Alcock ended up landing the role.

James Gunn confirmed the news on social media praising Milly Alcock: “This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis, and Ana Nogueira.”

When Will Wee See Milly Alcock as Supergirl?

Although she’s been confirmed for the role, there is still no accurate information on what projects she will be working on. According to rumors, Milly Alcock could appear in the upcoming Superman Legacywhich is about to start shooting soon with David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane. This movie will hit cinemas in 2025.

The only certain thing about Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is that she will have her solo feature Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as announced by DC at the Studio Press last year. However, this project is only an idea since it has no director assigned nor a scheduled release date.

What we know is that this Supergirl will be somewhat different from the one we’ve seen on screen so far. As announced by James Gunn himself, they will focus on the big differences between Superman and Supergirl:

“In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing,” said Gunn excitedly about the character.

We might have to wait a while to see the great Milly Alcock as Supergirl, but we’re certain that the passion with which James Gunn has described both the character for the new DC universe as well as Alcock’s work is certainly exciting!
