Morgan Spurlock, director of the famous Oscar-nominated documentary ‘Super Size Me’, has passed away at the age of 53 in his home in New York.
The director’s death occurred last Thursday, but the family only made the news public today through an emotional statement on social media.
Craig Spurlock, the filmmaker’s brother, mourned Morgan’s departure and wrote: “The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am very proud to have worked alongside him.”
It is known that the cause of his death was an extremely aggressive cancer, a disease Spurlock had been fighting for some time, as he had even started chemotherapy treatment earlier this year.
Who was Morgan Spurlock?
Morgan Spurlock was an American filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter best known for his documentary “Super Size Me,” released in 2004.
The documentary was highly controversial because in it, Spurlock underwent a diet consisting exclusively of McDonald’s hamburgers for 30 days in order to investigate the effects of fast food on human health.
The film had a significant impact, as Morgan gained 11 kilograms and suffered from depression and liver dysfunction due to the consumption of fast food, raising awareness among people about the dangers of poor diet.
The documentary grossed over $22 million and was even nominated for an Oscar.
In addition to “Super Size Me,” Spurlock worked on other projects such as “Mansome,” “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,” “Where In the World Is Osama Bin Laden?” among many others.
