Netflix and Apple faced disappointment at the 2024 Oscars, with only one win for Netflix and a shutout for Apple despite their combined 32 nominations.

Netflix clinched its lone victory with Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” in the live action short film category. The film boasts a stellar cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes. However, Anderson was absent to accept the award.

Although Netflix led with 19 nominations across 11 films, including the critically acclaimed “Maestro” with seven nods, it failed to secure any additional wins. Similarly, Apple, with 13 nominations, saw no success, notably for Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

For Netflix, this marks its 23rd Oscar win since 2017. Yet, it continues to chase elusive victories in major categories like best picture, lead actor, and lead actress. “Maestro” missed out on best picture, losing to “Oppenheimer,” while its lead actors Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan were also snubbed.

Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a high-budget endeavor for Apple, fell short despite significant investment. The film, starring Lily Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro, failed to convert any of its nominations into wins, highlighting a major setback for the tech giant’s ambitious foray into filmmaking.

Apple’s earlier success at the Oscars, including winning best picture in 2022 for “CODA,” didn’t translate to 2024. The absence of recognition for “Napoleon,” despite substantial investment, underscores the unpredictability of awards season.

In contrast, Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures celebrated a win with Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” for adapted screenplay. The film, starring Jeffrey Wright, premiered on MGM+ streaming service, demonstrating the growing influence of streaming platforms in the film industry.

While Netflix’s performance at the 2024 Oscars paled compared to previous years, it continued its streak of wins, albeit with a single triumph. In past years, Netflix dominated the awards, with notable wins for films like “Roma” and documentaries like “Icarus” and “The White Helmets.”

Despite the setbacks, both Netflix and Apple remain formidable players in the entertainment landscape, with their influence extending beyond traditional cinema to redefine storytelling in the digital age.
