SpongeBob SquarePants was undoubtedly one of the most famous cartoons of the 2000s, so no millennial has not laughed at any of its chapters. The series was created by animator, cartoonist, and marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg and premiered on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999.
From that moment on, Bob, Patrick, Squidward, and Sandy were the characters that millions of children grew up with, as the cartoon had more than 270 episodes, 13 seasons, and even several movies. However, like life itself, not everything is rosy, because, for years there have been several creepy stories behind the origin of the cartoon, and here we will tell you the darkest of them all.

The Creepy True Story Behind SpongeBob SquarePants
The most terrifying story behind SpongeBob is a theory that indicates that all the characters of the cartoon are the result of nuclear experiments; although this may sound crazy, there is a real historical event that could reinforce this idea.
Between 1946 and 1958, the United States conducted several nuclear tests in a region called Bikini Atoll, a name that is very similar to that of the city in the cartoon. It is important to point out that Bikini Atoll is located in the Marshall Islands and is made up of several islets surrounding a lagoon, a site where more than 20 hydrogen atomic bombs were dropped.

The theory of SpongeBob‘s origin is that all the cartoon characters were victims of radiation and suffered mutations that gave them human abilities. Although the creator of the series, Stephen Hillenburg, never confirmed this terrifying theory, as he died at the age of 57 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative disease that has no cure, some Internet users suggest that this could be the real story behind the series.
The reason for this is that when Hillenburg was alive, he acknowledged on more than one occasion that SpongeBob was created to raise awareness about marine pollution and the damage it can cause.
