In February, several music tracks, including those of TS, were indefinitely removed from TikTok after the app and UMG failed to reach an agreement to renew their licensing contract, which expired on January 31. According to Universal Music, TikTok attempted to intimidate them into agreeing to a lower value than the previous licensing permissions agreement. The music company also claimed that TikTok was unwilling to address concerns about AI and piracy. In response, the app stated that UMG was providing “false narratives.”
According to Variety, it’s likely that Swift reached an agreement directly with the app because, despite her music being distributed through Universal, she owns her master and can create her agreements. It has also been mentioned that music from artists like Ariana Grande or Camila Cabello stills has taken off on the platform, even though they are signed with Universal.

The return of Swift’s music may be related to the release of her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which will be available on April 19, and this may be a promotional tactic, similar to what happened with her previous album, Midnights.
Artists often agree with UMG’s arguments about low royalty payments and lack of protection against AI, but many express their dissatisfaction. In the past five years, TikTok has emerged as the primary platform for discovering and promoting music. Because of this, record labels pressure their artists to create songs that will “go viral” on the platform, which many artists associated with UMG did, only to see their music silenced on the app. Both UMG and TikTok seem to be standing firm in their positions in this dispute.
